IOM assist returning migrants at the Sarpi Border Crossing Point
IOM has recently established a presence at the Sarpi Crossing Point on the border between Georgia and Turkey on the Black Sea coast. Two IOM staff members are present in Sarpi around the clock to speak to migrants returning from Turkey and refer people with acute problems to relevant assistance services.
Until the end of May IOM interviewed 171 migrants returning from Turkey to establish whether any of them had been trafficked into exploitation or whether they otherwise required any assistance. Six among the respondents were referred to the State Fund for the Protection and Assistance to Victims of Trafficking in Persons and to specialized police units dealing with the combat of human trafficking and irregular migration
The migrant assistance service opened in Sarpi has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Department of State as part of the project “Building Capacity to Enhance Georgia’s Referral Mechanism and International Law Enforcement Cooperation in the Field of Counter-Trafficking”. This project will run until October 2012.
